introducing native creation stories
Hi, my name is Paige, and I am in a contemporary first nations class at Pauline Johnston school. what we have studied while being in this class is Native Creation Stories, what I've taken from the creation stories is the natives view and belief on how the world came to be. Some of the stories being "Mi' kmaq creation story". "The story of nuliajuk (inuit)". "The creation of Haida Gwaii (Haida)" and "Hopi origin story" each of these stories share a special message coordinating with the Natives putting pieces together on how world was created.
for example, in "The story of nuliajuk" The stories is explaining that there was a woman who never wanted to get married. so, she got sent out to an island. with the land only containing dogs as living things. after a while she decides to have sexual intercourse with one of the dogs and make babies of all nationalities being sent all around the world. this was a story explaining the creation of how different nationalities came to be. Another one being "Mi' kmaq" this story is explaining that there was once a lightning bolt that hit 3 times creating a male silhouette forming man. but also taking nonliving and living things like grass, Leafs, stone and turning each thing into a human life. that's how the creation of humans was brought up in native creation stories. As you see with the summary of these stories, they all show a sense in belief of the way the world was formed to be.
from hearing these different stories what stood out to me was the thought process to really put into consideration of how the world actually began. Plus, the different perspectives on each cultures point of view. I enjoyed hearing their side of the story on how humans became living moving things and comparing it to the things I've learned while growing up. There stories are very interesting and really make me have vision on how the world was made.
Each one of these creation stories also share a deep meaning on respecting the world because the world is a great beautiful place and shows the importance of connection to the land with the examples from this text. I believe creation stories are very interesting and educational I enjoyed reading them in class!
