Hi, my name is Paige, and I am in a contemporary first nations class at Pauline Johnson school, while in this class we are starting our first novel called " Indian horse". The main character "Saul". has been through a lot in his life throughout the start of this book. Introducing parts of his life including his sister being taken away while he slept. as Saul grew up his brother ben began to become sick with tuberculosis and eventually passed away. His mother was very quiet and ghostlike, and his father would show his emotions through an angry quietness. Mother reacts to Bens's death very differently and says he should be taken to a priest. even though priests at residential schools formed the mother and left scars within her which I see as an odd thing because why would you want your son to be prayed over by someone who hurt you. The mother and father end up leaving Saul behind with his grandmother. Which leaves Saul questioning why he didn't get to go with them. The grandmother and Saul begin to go on an adventure to try and find the parents in minoose in manicki but the winter air was ripe, and they had to Kanoe over a cold lake. eventually after a few hours of sailing through the cold water the Kanoe started to collapse from the ice within the water. splitting the Kanoe into two pieces and eventually Saul and his grandmother were in the water. The grandmother caring Saul to shore while also looking out for people to wave down. grandmother losses strength but reaches shore with Saul in hand. She was so cold her body began to sit down, so she puts herself to rest on Saul and passes away. Moments later Saul was taken by white people to attend at St Jerome's Residential School.
Saul has had it very tough, and it seems to be never ending with him and sadness and problems happening all around him. I think Saul may be wondering what he did wrong to deserve all this trauma from all of his family members. But he seems to face all these losses very well. it also says in the novel as he grows up, he begins to develop a sense of love for alcohol meaning he may be falling into alcoholism. which may be a mechanism to ease the pain. the understanding of loss in Sauls family is certainly hidden seeing the mother and father leave their child when their other child just passed and not sharing the time to grieve shows they aren't very open about their emotions.
In my family there is definitely a lot of background knowledge and history behind the Noble name. with alive and not alive ones usually when i have a question about past times i go to my Nanny. which is my great grandmother of my dad's side. she is 91 years old and still sits around the dinner table with us and tells us about all our family history and the lives of people she loved and how she truly did cherish them who I yet did not get to meet. For my mom's side there is my granny. she make sure to tell me about all the names of aunts and grandparents she used to go visit and the memories they would make just like her and i do. i hear very many good and sad stories come from both sides of my family but it is always nice to know some facts about your family history and have someone to ask about it.
